Hopewell, NY (December 10, 2024) – A sheriff’s deputy from the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is in intensive care following a serious collision with an SUV on Routes 5 and 20 in the Town of Hopewell on Monday night. The crash occurred between Freshour Rd and Mumby Rd while the deputy was en route to assist a state trooper who was attempting to make an arrest in Canandaigua. The suspect, who was reportedly resisting arrest, prompted the trooper to call for backup.
The deputy, who was driving in emergency mode at the time, collided with an SUV heading in the opposite direction. The impact caused the deputy to suffer serious internal injuries, requiring emergency surgery. Fortunately, the deputy is in stable condition following the surgery. The driver of the SUV was also injured and is currently hospitalized in stable condition with a leg injury.
Emergency responders from the Ontario County Fire and Rescue worked quickly to extricate the deputy from the wrecked patrol car. The deputy was then transported by ambulance to Strong Hospital for treatment. The road was initially closed for emergency response and investigation but has since reopened.
