Holt County, MO (January 4, 2025) – A tragic incident on northbound I-29 near the 84-mile marker in Mound City resulted in the death of a 33-year-old male pedestrian on Saturday afternoon. The crash occurred at approximately 12:40 PM and involved a 1999 Peterbilt 379 semi-truck.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the semi-truck was parked on the east shoulder of northbound I-29 when it became a downhill runaway. The vehicle struck the pedestrian, identified as a 33-year-old male from Neligh, NE. The truck continued off the roadway, and its towed unit collided with a light pole before coming to rest off the east side of the road on its wheels.
The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene by Holt County Coroner Gene Bradley at 12:58 PM. The semi-truck sustained minor damage and was towed from the scene by Benefiel’s. Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the runaway vehicle.
The crash response involved the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Holt County Sheriff’s Office, and Mound City Police Department.
