Holland Twp, MI (February 23, 2025) – Four people, including three women and a young girl, sustained injuries in a two-car crash at the intersection of U.S. 31 and Quincy Street on Saturday morning.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of the crash at approximately 6:58 a.m. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with a 38-year-old woman from Ontario, Canada, who had been traveling northbound on U.S. 31 when her vehicle entered the intersection and was struck. She was unable to recall the color of the traffic signal at the time.

The other driver, a 28-year-old woman from Holland, was heading eastbound on Quincy Street and did not remember the collision occurring. After the initial impact, both vehicles collided with a utility pole, causing traffic lights to fall into the roadway and forcing authorities to shut down the intersection for an extended period.

The 28-year-old woman was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 38-year-old driver sought medical attention by private vehicle, while two passengers in her car, a 31-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl, both from Ontario, were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash to determine what led to the accident. Traffic disruptions persisted as crews worked to repair the damaged traffic signals.

Our thoughts are with those injured in this crash.

Intersection Accidents and Traffic Signals in Michigan

Intersections with high-speed roadways, such as U.S. 31, are frequent sites of serious crashes, particularly when drivers are unsure of signal changes or visibility is limited. Traffic signal malfunctions, driver inattention, and unclear right-of-way situations often contribute to dangerous collisions in Michigan.

According to state traffic safety reports, failure to obey traffic signals is a common cause of accidents at intersections. In some cases, drivers may misinterpret yellow lights, while others might enter an intersection before verifying cross-traffic clearance. When a crash occurs at a high-speed corridor like U.S. 31, the impact can lead to extensive damage and significant injuries.

Motorists are urged to remain aware of their surroundings, approach intersections cautiously, and always confirm traffic signals before proceeding. Defensive driving techniques, such as slowing down in high-risk areas and avoiding distractions, can help reduce the likelihood of severe accidents.

If you or someone you know has been involved in an intersection crash, seeking medical attention and understanding your legal rights is essential.
