Cyclist Safety and Roadway Risks in Texas
Texas has seen an increase in cyclist-related accidents as roadways become more congested with motor vehicles and alternative transportation. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), hundreds of crashes involving bicycles occur each year, many resulting in serious injuries or fatalities.
Cyclists are at greater risk on rural roadways like FM 300, where high-speed traffic, limited lighting, and driver visibility issues can increase the likelihood of rear-end collisions. Low sun angles during sunrise and sunset also pose hazards, as they can impair a driver’s ability to see clearly.
To improve safety for cyclists and motorists alike, drivers should exercise caution when sharing the road with bicycles. This includes maintaining a safe following distance, reducing speed in low-visibility conditions, and being extra vigilant in rural or dimly lit areas. Cyclists are also encouraged to wear reflective gear, use lights, and stay aware of surrounding traffic conditions to minimize risks.
If you or a loved one has been involved in a cycling accident, seeking medical attention and understanding your legal options is essential. Victims and their families may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages.
