Hartland, MN (September 28, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on MN Highway 13 near Freeborn County Road 35, resulting in the death of one individual. The incident involved a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and a 2023 Kenworth truck tractor and trailer.
According to preliminary reports, the Pontiac was traveling northbound on MN Hwy 13 when it collided with the southbound Kenworth truck. The crash resulted in significant damage and has been classified as a fatal incident involving an unbelted and unrestrained occupant.
The driver of the Pontiac, identified as 26-year-old Luke Mathew Hershey from Hartland, was pronounced dead at the scene. Unfortunately, he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. The driver of the Kenworth, 80-year-old Dwight Craig Kleinschrodt from Albert Lea, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to MCHS – Albert Lea for medical care. He was wearing a seat belt during the incident.
Emergency responders from various agencies, including Waseca County Sheriff’s Office, New Richland Police Department, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, New Richland Fire Department, Hartland Fire Department, and Mayo Ambulance, were on the scene to assist with the situation.
The road conditions were reported as dry at the time of the crash. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing.
