Hampden, ME (December 10, 2024) – One person was hospitalized following a house fire in Hampden Monday night. The fire, which occurred on Northern Avenue, was reported at approximately 5:30 PM. Emergency crews, including multiple mutual aid departments from the Greater Bangor area, were dispatched to the scene to battle the blaze.
According to Hampden Fire Department Lt. Oliver Bianchi, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the upstairs area of the home, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the structure. Despite their quick response, the home, which is an older-style construction with thick building materials, presented challenges in extinguishing the flames. The fire was further complicated by the cold weather conditions.
The family was home at the time of the fire. One individual sustained second-degree burns and was transported to Northern Light hospital for treatment. Fortunately, a family pet, a bunny, was rescued from the home without issue.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze, which could have spread quickly due to the building’s construction. While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, the quick action from local fire departments helped limit the damage and prevent further injuries.

House fires, especially in older homes, can be particularly dangerous due to the materials used in construction and the potential for quick spread. In cold conditions, firefighting efforts can be further complicated, requiring additional resources and mutual aid from surrounding departments. The response from the Hampden Fire Department and their mutual aid partners helped contain the fire and prevent additional harm to the family.
The community’s thoughts are with those affected by the fire, and we hope for a swift recovery for the individual injured. Investigators will continue to examine the cause of the fire, and further details will be provided as more information becomes available.
