Hagerstown, MD (October 20, 2024) – This morning at approximately 10:20 AM, emergency units were alerted to a smoke detector activation at a row home located in the 200 block of Prospect Avenue. Initial reports to the Emergency Communications Center (ECC) indicated that there was a fire with possible occupants trapped inside, prompting an upgrade to a structure fire response.

Special Unit 3-2 was the first to arrive on the scene, confirming a working fire with visible rescue operations taking place from the roof at the front of the structure. Additional units quickly deployed a ladder to facilitate the rescue of the occupants from the roof while also deploying attack lines and conducting searches within the building. Emergency responders from CRS transported one patient to the hospital for further evaluation.

Significant fire damage was contained to two of the nine units within the row, with several other units experiencing smoke and water damage as a result of the firefighting efforts. The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office is currently investigating the cause of the fire and has advised that it is believed to be accidental. The City building inspector, City Light, and the Red Cross are on the scene providing assistance to the affected occupants.
