Gulf Shores, AL (January 31, 2025) – A 77-year-old woman from Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, was left in critical condition after being struck in a hit-and-run accident on Wednesday afternoon in Gulf Shores.

According to the Gulf Shores Police Department, the crash occurred around 12:44 p.m. in the 900 block of West Lagoon Avenue. Officers arrived to find the woman unconscious in the roadway with serious injuries. Gulf Shores Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services rendered aid at the scene before she was airlifted to a nearby hospital for advanced medical care.

Authorities determined that the woman was walking in a pedestrian crosswalk when she was hit. However, there was initially little information about her identity or the vehicle involved. Following an investigation by the Traffic Homicide Unit and Criminal Investigation Division, officers identified and arrested 43-year-old Gusatvo Licona-Hernandez of Calera, Alabama. He has been charged with Failure to Report an Accident with Serious Injuries, a felony offense. Licona-Hernandez is currently being held at the Gulf Shores City Jail as the investigation continues.

Our thoughts are with the injured woman, and we hope for her full recovery.

Pedestrian Accidents in Alabama

Pedestrian accidents remain a significant concern across Alabama, particularly in areas like Gulf Shores that experience high foot traffic and tourism. Crosswalks are designed to provide safe passage for pedestrians, but reckless or inattentive drivers can still pose a serious threat.

According to Alabama traffic data, pedestrian-related accidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the lack of protection for those on foot. Factors such as driver distraction, speeding, and failure to yield the right of way contribute to many of these tragic incidents. In cases where a driver flees the scene, law enforcement agencies rely on witness statements, surveillance footage, and forensic evidence to track down suspects and bring them to justice.

Victims of pedestrian crashes often face long recovery periods, extensive medical bills, and emotional trauma. Legal options may be available to those injured in such incidents, including pursuing compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
