Groveton, NH (February 18, 2025) – Emergency crews responded to a serious crash involving a tractor-trailer and a railroad plow on Route 3 Monday evening, leaving two people injured.
According to authorities, the accident occurred at approximately 6:02 p.m. near mile marker 173. Reports indicate that a railroad plow, driven by 22-year-old Joseph Letourneau of Derby, VT, was clearing snow when it became stuck in the middle of the highway. A southbound tractor-trailer carrying a load of lumber was unable to stop in time and collided head-on with the plow.
The impact of the crash caused the tractor-trailer, operated by 64-year-old Edward Stone of Williamstown, VT, to lose a significant portion of its lumber load, which scattered across Route 3. Emergency responders, including Groveton Ambulance and Northumberland fire crews, provided medical assistance at the scene. Both Letourneau and Stone sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Investigators determined that the railroad crossing warning signals were not flashing when the plow became stuck. However, the plow’s roof-mounted amber light was active at the time of the crash. Both vehicles suffered substantial damage, and Route 3 remained closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
Our thoughts are with the victims, and we hope for their full recovery.
Truck Accidents in New Hampshire
Collisions involving large commercial vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, can be particularly hazardous due to their size and weight. In cases like this, where cargo spills onto the roadway, additional dangers arise for other motorists and emergency responders.
New Hampshire’s winter conditions and the necessity of road-clearing equipment increase the risk of accidents, particularly in rural areas. In this instance, the unexpected obstruction of Route 3 by a stuck railroad plow contributed to the crash. While the investigation is ongoing, this incident underscores the importance of proper warning systems and visibility measures for both highway maintenance equipment and commercial vehicles.
Truck accidents often result in complex liability issues, especially when multiple parties are involved. If a vehicle or equipment failure contributed to a collision, further legal and regulatory evaluations may be required. Victims of truck accidents should be aware of their legal rights and options for pursuing compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a truck accident, it’s important to seek guidance from professionals who understand the complexities of these cases. Speaking with an experienced legal representative can help ensure you receive the support and compensation you deserve.
