Greenville County, SC (December 29, 2024) – A tragic crash on Interstate 185 near mile marker 5 claimed the life of 36-year-old Javier Visbal Ortega on Saturday night, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. The accident, involving two vehicles, occurred around 6:30 PM just north of Simpsonville.

South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that a Toyota Sedan rear-ended a Ford Focus while both vehicles were traveling southbound on I-185. The impact caused the Ford Focus to veer off the roadway and collide with a barrier. Ortega, the driver of the Ford Focus, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A passenger in the Focus was transported to an area hospital with injuries. The driver of the Toyota Sedan was also hospitalized.

Authorities confirmed that Ortega’s autopsy is scheduled for Monday as part of the ongoing investigation. Additional details about the condition of the injured or potential charges have not been released.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Javier Visbal Ortega during this difficult time, and we wish the injured individuals a swift recovery.

Rear-End Collisions in South Carolina

Rear-end collisions are among the most common types of accidents on highways and can result in devastating outcomes, especially at high speeds. These crashes often occur due to factors such as distracted driving, tailgating, or failure to adjust to traffic conditions.

South Carolina’s Department of Public Safety emphasizes the importance of maintaining safe following distances and staying alert to prevent rear-end collisions. Highways like I-185, with heavy traffic flow, are particularly prone to such incidents.

For victims and their families, the aftermath of a severe accident can involve emotional distress, financial strain, and legal complexities. Understanding one’s rights and exploring options for compensation are crucial steps toward recovery and accountability.
