Greenleaf, ID (January 29, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle collision in Greenleaf claimed the life of one driver on Tuesday morning. The crash occurred at approximately 7:43 a.m. at the intersection of State Highway 19 and Notus Road, prompting an investigation by the Idaho State Police.

According to officials, an 86-year-old Caldwell man was driving a 2008 Ford F-150 southbound on Notus Road when he failed to yield to traffic on State Highway 19. His vehicle was struck by a westbound 2024 Freightliner semi-truck driven by a 45-year-old male from Boise.

Sadly, the driver of the Ford F-150 succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Authorities have notified his next of kin. The driver of the semi-truck was transported to a local hospital at a later time, but details on his condition have not been released.

The intersection was blocked for approximately three hours as investigators worked to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash. The Idaho State Police continue to investigate this fatal incident.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim, and we hope for a full recovery for the injured driver.

Failure to Yield Accidents in Idaho

Failure to yield is a leading cause of intersection collisions, particularly on high-speed roads like State Highway 19. When a driver does not yield the right of way, the risk of severe or fatal injuries increases significantly, especially when large commercial vehicles like semi-trucks are involved. Due to their size and weight, semi-trucks require longer stopping distances, making last-second evasive maneuvers difficult.

Idaho operates under a fault-based system for traffic accidents, meaning that the at-fault driver or their insurance may be held liable for damages. In cases involving fatalities, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to recover compensation for funeral expenses, medical costs, and other financial burdens. Investigations into these crashes typically include eyewitness accounts, police reports, and accident reconstruction to determine liability.

To reduce the risk of accidents, drivers—especially elderly motorists—should take extra precautions at intersections by ensuring they have a clear view of approaching traffic before proceeding. Road safety measures such as improved signage, adjusted signal timing, and better lighting at high-risk intersections may also help prevent tragic collisions.
