Greenland, NH (October 17, 2024) – A tragic accident on Wednesday afternoon resulted in the deaths of two individuals and serious injuries to another on Interstate 95 in New Hampshire. The crash occurred around 1:15 p.m. between Exits 3 and 2, just before the toll area, leading to significant debris scattered across both sides of the highway.
According to police reports, a car traveling north on the interstate crossed the median into the southbound lanes, colliding with a U-Haul truck. The impact caused the U-Haul to then cross back into the northbound side of the highway, ultimately coming to a stop in the wood line. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with debris flying and smoke rising from the wreckage. One driver noted, “You could just see the stuff flying up in the air; you could see the smoke.”
The driver of the car, identified as 24-year-old Steve Le from Methuen, Massachusetts, and the driver of the U-Haul, 58-year-old Leslie Lynn from Roanoke, Virginia, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Additionally, a passenger in the U-Haul sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical care.
In the aftermath of the crash, emergency crews closed all southbound lanes of I-95, as well as two right lanes and the left breakdown lane on the northbound side, leading to significant traffic delays. While many drivers remained patient, some attempted to cross over to the northbound side, prompting police to address these unsafe maneuvers. New Hampshire State Police Lt. Joseph Ronchi stated, “Rather than dedicating everything we have to the event at the scene, we have to divert our resources to deal with the people that are taking those medians, breaking the law.”
The highway was fully reopened by 5:20 p.m. as crews worked to clear the scene and debris. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash, examining factors such as speed, impairment, and distracted driving.
