Grafton, MA (January 23, 2025) – A 36-year-old man from Grafton tragically lost his life after being struck by a tractor-trailer on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) eastbound Wednesday evening. The accident occurred at mile marker 98 and resulted in significant traffic delays as authorities conducted an on-scene investigation.
Massachusetts State Police reported receiving multiple calls about a pedestrian struck on I-90 shortly after 7 p.m. When troopers arrived, they found the victim, identified as Jayson Bastarache, deceased at the scene. The circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear, though a bicycle was discovered on a nearby side street, along with footprints leading to the highway.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation initially reported the crash as involving serious injuries and closed the two right lanes, warning drivers to expect delays. During the investigation, one lane was opened for travel between mile markers 96 and 98, while the other lanes remained closed until approximately 11 p.m.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and detectives from the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities have not disclosed further details about why the victim entered the roadway.
“Our condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Jayson Bastarache during this difficult time,” police said in a statement.
