Gothenburg, NE (February 12, 2025) – A Gothenburg couple tragically lost their lives following a crash in Dawson County early Monday morning.
Authorities responded to reports of a wrecked vehicle in the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) Canal near Lakeview Drive and Highway 47 shortly after 8:10 a.m. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found two individuals deceased inside the vehicle.
The Gothenburg Police Department identified the victims as 70-year-old Jesse Magana, who was driving, and his wife, 65-year-old Annette Magana. Investigators determined that the couple had been traveling westbound on 27th Street around 11:00 p.m. Sunday when their vehicle crossed Highway 47 and collided head-on with the north canal. The vehicle then slid down into the dry canal, where it remained unnoticed until the following morning.
Officials suspect that speed and alcohol may have contributed to the crash and noted that neither occupant appeared to have been wearing a seatbelt. The investigation remains ongoing.
Multiple agencies, including the Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, and Nebraska State Patrol, assisted in the response and recovery efforts.
Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the victims during this difficult time.
Fatal Single-Vehicle Accidents in Nebraska
Single-vehicle accidents, especially those involving fixed objects, often result in severe or fatal injuries. In cases like the crash in Gothenburg, factors such as speed, impairment, and lack of seatbelt use may increase the risk of serious harm. According to Nebraska traffic safety reports, a significant percentage of roadway fatalities involve drivers and passengers who were not wearing seatbelts at the time of impact.
Impaired driving and excessive speed are also leading causes of fatal crashes across the state. When alcohol is involved, reaction times and judgment become impaired, increasing the likelihood of losing control of a vehicle. Additionally, rural roads—such as those near Highway 47—often present additional hazards, including limited visibility and sharp turns.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of safe driving habits, including wearing seatbelts, obeying speed limits, and avoiding impaired driving. These preventive measures can significantly reduce the likelihood of fatal accidents.
