Goodfield, IL (February 17, 2025) – A fatal crash on Interstate 74 near the Goodfield exit early Monday morning left one person dead and another injured, according to authorities.
The incident was reported just before 5:00 a.m. when an eastbound vehicle struck a guardrail before crashing into the overpass near the exit. The male driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shortly after the initial impact, a second vehicle collided with the stopped car in the roadway. The driver of the second vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Due to the severity of the crash, eastbound I-74 was closed at the underpass as of 7:30 a.m. Authorities allowed traffic to exit at Goodfield and re-enter the highway to continue eastbound. Officials estimated the closure would remain in effect until approximately 9:30 a.m. as investigators worked at the scene.
The Woodford County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies are conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash. The identity of the deceased driver has not yet been released.

Fatal Highway Accidents in Illinois
Highway crashes, particularly those involving guardrails and overpasses, often lead to severe or fatal injuries. Interstate 74 is a major route connecting cities such as Peoria and Normal, with high traffic volumes at all hours of the day. Early-morning accidents can be particularly dangerous due to reduced visibility, driver fatigue, and roadway conditions.
Studies from the Illinois Department of Transportation indicate that crashes involving vehicles stopped on the roadway pose a significant risk for secondary collisions. Drivers approaching a stopped or disabled vehicle at high speeds may not have enough time to react, increasing the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities. In this case, the second driver was fortunate to survive with non-life-threatening injuries.
Fatal crashes often leave families dealing with grief and unexpected financial burdens, including medical expenses, funeral costs, and loss of income. Legal options may be available to help families seek compensation and hold responsible parties accountable.
