Glynn County, GA (February 3, 2025) – A U.S. Capitol Police recruit lost his life, and several others sustained serious injuries following a two-vehicle collision on F.J. Torras Causeway in Glynn County on Saturday night.
According to officials, the crash occurred just before 10:00 PM while a group of six off-duty Capitol Police recruits was in Glynn County for training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Brunswick. Authorities reported that a Ford Escape, traveling westbound, attempted to turn left into Morningstar Marina but failed to yield to an eastbound Jeep Wrangler. The impact struck the driver’s side of the Jeep, causing it to overturn.
Three of the recruits were ejected from the vehicle and suffered severe injuries. Christopher Katz, 22, of Crompond, New York, later succumbed to his injuries after being airlifted to a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida. The remaining injured recruits were also transported via life flight for emergency treatment.
The U.S. Capitol Police confirmed the loss of Katz in a statement, calling the incident devastating. Katz, who joined the department as a recruit in November, previously served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a military policeman and graduated from Temple University with a degree in criminal justice.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Joe Morelle expressed their condolences, stating that Katz’s service and dedication would be honored when the House reconvenes.
The crash remains under investigation as officials work to determine the contributing factors.

Vehicle Accidents in Georgia
Georgia sees thousands of vehicle crashes each year, with high-speed roadways like F.J. Torras Causeway presenting increased risks for severe or fatal accidents. Left-turn collisions, such as the one in this case, often occur when drivers fail to yield to oncoming traffic, misjudge vehicle speeds, or become distracted at intersections.
One of the primary causes of serious vehicle crashes is failure to yield the right of way. Many collisions occur when turning drivers make unsafe left turns, leading to dangerous side-impact crashes, rollovers, and ejections. At higher speeds, these types of crashes result in devastating consequences, especially for unrestrained passengers.
Ejection injuries in vehicle crashes often result in severe trauma, including head injuries, fractures, and internal organ damage. This is why seat belt use is critical, as properly restrained passengers are far less likely to be thrown from a vehicle during a crash. Investigators will likely examine whether all occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
For those involved in serious crashes, seeking immediate medical care is crucial. Some injuries may not be apparent at first but can worsen over time. Additionally, documenting the accident scene, obtaining police reports, and speaking with witnesses are important steps for legal and insurance purposes.
For families dealing with the loss of a loved one, the emotional and financial toll can be overwhelming. Funeral costs, medical bills, and other unexpected expenses can create significant hardship. Seeking legal guidance from professionals who specialize in accident and wrongful death claims may help families understand their rights and options for support.
