Gilbert, AZ (January 12, 2025) – An 88-year-old woman tragically lost her life late Saturday night when a pickup truck crashed into the American Orchards Senior Community near Lindsay and Guadalupe Roads. The driver fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities.
The incident occurred just before 10 p.m., prompting a response from Gilbert police. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, Mary Lillian Haapala, deceased inside the building. A large hole in the side of the structure marked the devastating impact of the crash.
The driver, identified as 33-year-old Joshua Michael Degolier, fled the scene before officers arrived but was later located and taken into custody. Degolier has been charged with second-degree murder, failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in death or serious injury, and failure to render aid.
Authorities believe impairment was a factor in the collision, though the investigation is ongoing.
Crime scene tape cordoned off the parking lot, and the pickup truck involved was towed from the scene as evidence. Arizona’s Family crews reported significant structural damage to the building.
Our thoughts are with Mary Lillian Haapala’s family and the residents of the senior living community during this difficult time.
