Georgetown, DE (September 25, 2024) – A serious incident occurred on Tuesday, September 24, when a man escaped from a corrections center work crew, stole a pickup truck, and subsequently crashed, resulting in injuries to a woman and three children. The suspect, 33-year-old Clifford David, was being held at the Sussex Community Corrections Center, a Level 4 facility designed for offenders transitioning back into the community.
On the day of the incident, David was assigned to a work crew detail in the Harrington area when he escaped and stole a Chevrolet Silverado. Reports indicate that he later arrived at a residence on the 16000 block of Whitesville Road in Delmar, Delaware, where he fled in the stolen vehicle with an unidentified 25-year-old woman and three children aged 1, 2, and 7.
During the escape, David reportedly stopped the vehicle and removed the children from the truck. However, the woman managed to pull the 1-year-old and 2-year-old back inside before David drove away again. A witness intervened and took custody of the 7-year-old child, who was unharmed.
David continued driving southbound at a high speed along August Road but failed to navigate a curve, causing the vehicle to enter a ditch and overturn. The woman and the two younger children were ejected from the vehicle. All three were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries.
After the crash, David fled the scene. Law enforcement officials conducted a search and subsequently obtained warrants for his arrest. On the morning of September 25, troopers located David on Sussex Highway near Salt Barn Road in Laurel, Delaware. He was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including reckless endangerment, theft of a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, vehicular assault, and leaving the scene of an injury crash.
David was arraigned and is currently held at the Sussex County Correctional Institution on a $21,000 secured bond.
