Genesee Township, MI (October 22, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Monday afternoon when a 57-year-old man from Genesee Township collided head-on with a fuel tanker on Dort Highway. The incident took place around 3:15 p.m. near Lewis Road, resulting in the immediate response of local emergency services.
According to the Genesee Township Police Department, the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was traveling south on Dort Highway when he crossed the center line and struck a fully loaded fuel tanker heading northbound. The impact caused the tanker to veer off the road and into a ditch.
Sadly, the driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his name pending notification of family members. Fortunately, the driver of the fuel tanker did not report any injuries as a result of the collision.
The 8000 block of Dort Highway was closed for several hours following the accident as the Genesee Township Fire Department and the Genesee County Hazardous Materials Team worked diligently to clean up a fuel spill and offload the contents of the tanker into another truck.
The Genesee Township police, in collaboration with the Michigan State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit, are conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the Silverado crossing the center line.
