Garfield County, OK (January 21, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle crash Monday morning in Garfield County claimed the lives of two individuals and left another critically injured. The collision occurred around 7:05 a.m. on U.S. 81 at Sumner Rd, just south of Waukomis.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), a southbound Nissan, driven by 24-year-old Adrian Galaviz of Hennessey, departed the roadway to the right before reentering the southbound lanes and then veering into the northbound lanes. The Nissan collided with a northbound GMC Envoy carrying two occupants.

Both drivers, Galaviz and 63-year-old Janet Hicks of Marshall were pronounced dead at the scene by the Waukomis Fire Department. A 29-year-old passenger in the GMC was airlifted to OU Health in critical condition. According to the OHP report, the surviving passenger was the only individual wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision, including what led Galaviz to lose control of his vehicle.

We want to send our condolences to the victims’ families in this difficult time. Our thoughts are with anyone impacted by this incident, and we hope for a swift recovery for those injured.

Two-Vehicle Accidents in Oklahoma

Serious crashes, like the one in Garfield County, highlight the dangers of highway travel and the devastating impact such accidents can have on families and communities. U.S. highways often see high-speed traffic, and factors such as driver distraction, vehicle malfunction, or roadway conditions can increase the risk of collisions.

The use of seat belts plays a crucial role in reducing the severity of injuries during accidents. Data from state agencies consistently show that occupants wearing seat belts are more likely to survive crashes or sustain less severe injuries. Despite their life-saving potential, seat belt usage remains inconsistent, especially in rural areas.

In the aftermath of a fatal collision, families face emotional and financial hardships, including medical bills, funeral expenses, and grief over the sudden loss of loved ones. It is essential for those affected to seek legal and professional support to navigate these challenges.
