Gardner, KS (January 28, 2025) – A tragic house fire early Monday morning claimed the life of one person in a home northwest of Gardner, Kansas. Authorities from Johnson County’s Fire District #1 reported that crews were dispatched to the scene just after 4:50 a.m. following a 911 call reporting a fire and a trapped resident.
When firefighters arrived, they immediately began working to extinguish the flames and search for the individual still inside. During their search, they found an unresponsive adult in an upstairs bedroom and rescued them through a window. Despite their efforts, paramedics from Johnson County Med-Act declared the individual dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
Another resident of the home, who escaped and called 911, stated that the home’s smoke alarms had alerted them to the fire. They declined medical treatment and are currently receiving assistance from the American Red Cross due to the significant heat and smoke damage the house sustained in the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Additionally, Fire District #1 noted that several cats that lived in the home are still unaccounted for.
