Fresno County, CA (February 24, 2025) – A Merced man was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI following a three-car crash involving an on-duty California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle early Sunday morning, according to authorities.
The collision occurred around 1:30 a.m. on the northbound lanes of Highway 41 near the Ashlan Avenue onramp. CHP reported that one of its patrol units had just completed a traffic stop and was re-entering the roadway with its emergency lights still activated when a Honda Accord struck it from behind.
The impact pushed the CHP vehicle forward into the Chevrolet Equinox that had been stopped moments earlier. All three vehicles spun out, with the Equinox coming to rest on the right shoulder while the CHP unit and the Accord crashed into the center concrete divider after crossing all lanes of traffic.
Emergency responders transported all involved individuals to a local hospital. The driver of the Accord was not injured, but his 26-year-old female passenger suffered major injuries. The driver of the Equinox sustained minor injuries, while both CHP officers in the patrol car suffered moderate injuries. Fortunately, all victims are expected to recover.
The driver of the Accord, identified as 28-year-old Jacob Perry of Merced, was arrested for felony DUI and booked into the Fresno County Jail. CHP continues to investigate the incident.
DUI-Related Crashes in California
Drunk driving remains a leading cause of serious crashes across California, often resulting in devastating injuries or fatalities. High-speed highways, such as Highway 41 in Fresno County, pose an increased risk when impaired drivers fail to react appropriately to road conditions, traffic stops, or emergency vehicles.
Alcohol and drug impairment slow reaction times, reduce coordination, and impair judgment, making it extremely dangerous for both the driver and others on the road. In many cases, DUI crashes lead to severe legal consequences, including felony charges when serious injuries occur.
Victims of DUI-related accidents often face extensive medical bills, rehabilitation costs, and emotional trauma. California law allows injured parties to seek compensation for damages caused by intoxicated drivers, ensuring they receive the financial support necessary for recovery.
