Freeport, ME (December 02, 2024) – A two-vehicle crash occurred early Monday morning on Interstate 295 in Freeport, resulting in one driver being hospitalized. The collision took place shortly before 7:30 AM in the southbound lanes, near mile marker 22. Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to the scene.
According to the Maine Department of Public Safety, a 2024 Toyota, which was merging from the right lane to the left lane, collided with a 2018 Volkswagen. The impact caused the Volkswagen to veer left and hit a guardrail. The Toyota then rolled onto its roof, coming to rest in the middle of I-295. Emergency responders, including Freeport Rescue, quickly transported the driver of the Toyota to Maine Medical Center with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. The driver of the Volkswagen complained of minor pain but declined to be transported to the hospital.
The crash led to a temporary stoppage of traffic in the southbound lanes. However, after a brief delay, drivers were able to pass the scene using a third lane that had been created by the merging on-ramp from Exit 22. Maine State Police were assisted on-site by Freeport Police, Freeport Fire and Rescue, the Maine Department of Transportation, and Atlantic Coast Towing.
