Fraser, CO (December 28, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Highway 40 near milepost 228 in Fraser on Thursday morning, leaving one person dead and several others injured. The crash involved a pickup truck and a semi-truck on icy roads, according to the Fraser Winter Park Police Department.
The incident took place just before 9:30 a.m. when a 2021 Toyota Tundra traveling eastbound on Highway 40 lost traction on the icy roadway. The vehicle rotated counterclockwise into the westbound lane, where it collided with a 2024 Peterbilt semi-truck. The front of the semi-truck struck the passenger side of the Tundra, causing it to veer off the road and come to a stop approximately 30 feet from the westbound lane.
The Tundra was carrying five occupants at the time of the crash. Tragically, one passenger, a 29-year-old man from Bethesda, Maryland, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity will be released later by the Grand County Coroner’s Office. The other four occupants of the Tundra sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals. One passenger, identified as a female, is reported to be in critical condition at a Denver area hospital. The driver of the Tundra, a 37-year-old man from Aurora, had their condition unconfirmed as of this report.
The driver of the Peterbilt semi-truck, a 34-year-old man from Lochbuie, was unharmed in the collision. Police confirmed that the fuel tanker being hauled by the semi was not compromised, and no hazardous materials were spilled.
Authorities stated that neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to have played a role in the crash. Investigators are continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
