Frankenmuth, MI (December 19, 2024) – A crossing guard sustained non-life-threatening injuries Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while assisting pedestrians near Frankenmuth High School.

The Frankenmuth Police Department reported that the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 AM at the intersection of Park Dr and Genesee St. A 42-year-old driver from Millington, making a left turn, collided with the crossing guard, who was in the crosswalk. The guard was equipped with high-visibility gear, including a reflective coat, flashing LED lights on their shoulder and stop sign, and a necklace of illuminated Christmas lights, enhancing their visibility at the time of the incident.

Emergency responders, including an MMR ambulance crew, treated the injured guard on the scene before transporting them to Covenant HealthCare hospital in Saginaw for further evaluation. The driver was issued a citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The incident highlights the ongoing need for drivers to remain vigilant in school zones and intersections where crossing guards are actively working to ensure pedestrian safety. Our thoughts are with the injured crossing guard, and we wish them a speedy recovery.

Pedestrian Safety in Michigan

Accidents involving pedestrians, particularly in school zones, remain a critical safety concern in Michigan. Drivers are legally required to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and should exercise extra caution in areas with crossing guards or heightened foot traffic. Despite high visibility measures taken by crossing guards, such as reflective gear and lighting, collisions can still occur when drivers fail to remain alert.

According to the Michigan State Police, pedestrian accidents in school zones often result in injuries that could have been avoided through stricter adherence to traffic laws. Failing to yield to pedestrians not only poses safety risks but also carries legal penalties.

Residents are urged to stay mindful of school zones and intersections where crossing guards are active, especially during peak hours in the morning and afternoon. Similarly, pedestrians and crossing guards are encouraged to continue using visibility-enhancing measures to minimize risks.
