Fort Smith, AR (November 18, 2024) – A devastating multi-vehicle crash occurred Saturday evening at the intersection of State Highway 255 and South 31st St, leaving one person dead and four others injured, according to local authorities.
The collision happened at approximately 6:18 p.m. when a 2003 Pontiac (Vehicle 1) traveling east on State Highway 255 failed to obey a traffic light and collided with a 2008 Toyota (Vehicle 2) heading north on South 31st St. The impact caused the Pontiac to collide with a 2022 Kia (Vehicle 3) traveling west on Highway 255. The force of the collision led the Pontiac to overturn and land on top of a 2010 Hyundai (Vehicle 4) also traveling west on Highway 255.
The passenger of Vehicle 1, identified as Calvin D. Eubanks, 25, of Fort Smith, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Pontiac, Kevin T. Swafford, 23, of Paris, was also ejected and suffered serious injuries. Both were transported to Mercy Hospital Fort Smith.
Three additional individuals were injured in the crash: James Summers, 46, of Arkoma (Driver of Vehicle 2) Ricky A. Wofford, 65, of Fort Smith (Driver of Vehicle 3) A minor passenger in Vehicle 4, whose identity and condition remain undisclosed.
The accident caused significant damage and disruption at the intersection, as emergency responders worked to rescue the injured and manage the scene. Authorities report that weather and road conditions were clear and dry at the time of the crash.
The collision remains under investigation to determine further contributing factors. The body of the deceased was taken to the Sebastian County Coroner for examination.
