Floyd, NY (November 23, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision resulted in the death of one person late Friday night on State Route 49 in the Town of Floyd. The accident involved a wrong-way vehicle and a tractor-trailer, leading to a fiery aftermath that required emergency response.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., a deputy with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, traveling eastbound in the Town of Whitestown, witnessed a vehicle heading west in the eastbound lanes. The wrong-way vehicle narrowly avoided colliding with the deputy’s patrol car after striking another vehicle ahead. The deputy activated emergency lights and attempted to stop the vehicle.
The wrong-way vehicle, identified as a 2022 Ford Explorer, collided with a 2025 Volvo truck and trailer operated by Franklyn Hummel, a 64-year-old from West Virginia. The impact caused both vehicles to ignite into flames. Despite the deputy’s efforts to rescue the Ford Explorer’s driver, the intense fire made it impossible. The driver of the Ford Explorer succumbed to injuries at the scene, while Hummel managed to escape unharmed and was evaluated by AmCare Ambulance.
Authorities have stated that the victim’s identity is pending confirmation by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office. The crash prompted an extended closure of State Route 49 eastbound near the Griffiss exit as emergency crews worked to clear the scene and conduct an investigation.
Emergency responders from Floyd Fire and Rescue, along with law enforcement, were present at the scene to assist in recovery efforts. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic incident.

Fatal Car Accidents in New York
New York roads, especially during high-traffic hours, can pose significant risks for motorists. Wrong-way driving incidents, like the one on State Route 49, highlight the dangers drivers face. Head-on collisions are among the most devastating types of crashes due to their high-impact forces, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities.
In this particular crash, the combination of wrong-way driving and the involvement of a commercial truck escalated the severity. Tractor-trailers are significantly larger and heavier than standard vehicles, making accidents involving them far more destructive. The fiery aftermath added another layer of complexity for rescuers and investigators.
State Route 49 serves as a key thoroughfare in Oneida County, frequently traveled by both local and through traffic. Incidents like this emphasize the need for enhanced safety measures, driver awareness, and potential improvements in road monitoring systems to prevent wrong-way driving.
