Flathead County, MT (November 9, 2024) – A 21-year-old man from Kalispell lost his life in a high-speed motorcycle crash on US Highway 93 Friday evening. The fatal collision occurred at mile marker 18, between Whitefish and Kalispell, just north of Tronstad Road.
According to the Montana Highway Patrol (MHP), the motorcyclist was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle northbound at speeds exceeding 90 mph and engaging in lane splitting—a maneuver where a motorcyclist rides between lanes of traffic. Witnesses reported that, for reasons still under investigation, the motorcyclist moved from the left lane into the right lane and struck the rear of another vehicle.
Emergency responders pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene. The victim, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, has not been publicly identified as authorities work to notify his family.
The driver of the second vehicle involved in the collision was unharmed and was confirmed to be wearing a seatbelt. MHP reported that alcohol and drugs were not contributing factors; however, excessive speed played a significant role in the accident.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the motorcyclist during this difficult time.
High-Speed Motorcycle Crashes and Road Safety in Montana
High-speed motorcycle crashes are among the most dangerous types of accidents, often leading to fatal outcomes. Factors such as speed, lane splitting, and traffic congestion significantly increase the likelihood of severe injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are 28 times more likely to die in a crash compared to occupants of passenger vehicles.
Montana’s highways are particularly prone to high-speed incidents due to their open stretches and relatively light traffic. While lane splitting remains a debated practice in the U.S., it is not legally permitted in Montana and can contribute to risky situations on the road.
To prevent similar tragedies, motorcyclists are urged to follow traffic laws, avoid excessive speeds, and always wear protective gear. Drivers should also remain vigilant and check blind spots to ensure motorcyclists’ safety.
For families impacted by fatal motorcycle accidents, the aftermath often involves emotional grief, financial strain, and legal complexities. Accessing support services and professional guidance can help ease these burdens.
