Fishersville, VA (February 28, 2025) – A fatal two-vehicle crash on Thursday claimed the life of 67-year-old Mark E. Lotts of Stuarts Draft, according to Virginia State Police
The accident occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Tinkling Spring Road. Authorities reported that Lotts, the executive director of business and finance for Augusta County Public Schools, was driving a 2001 BMW 325i southbound when his vehicle crossed the centerline. The BMW collided head-on with a 2017 Dodge Ram 2500 traveling in the opposite direction. Following the impact, the BMW veered off the right side of the road.
Despite wearing a seat belt, Lotts suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Dodge Ram, identified as 26-year-old Kevin L. Harris of Stuarts Draft, was initially reported to have sustained minor injuries. However, updated information from police confirmed that Harris suffered serious injuries and was transported to UVA Health in Charlottesville. Authorities noted that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
An investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr. Lotts, as well as with Mr. Harris as he recovers.
Head-On Collisions in Virginia
Head-on crashes, like the one on Tinkling Spring Road, often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the force of impact. These types of collisions frequently occur due to lane departures, distracted driving, fatigue, or medical emergencies.
Seat belt use plays a critical role in reducing the severity of injuries in crashes, though in some high-impact accidents, even proper restraint may not be enough to prevent fatal outcomes. Virginia drivers are urged to remain cautious, especially on two-lane roadways where centerline crossings can be particularly dangerous.
Victims of head-on collisions and their families often face significant medical expenses, emotional distress, and legal considerations in the aftermath of a crash. Seeking guidance and support can be crucial during this difficult time.
