Finlayson, MN (December 13, 2024) – A two-vehicle accident involving injuries occurred Thursday night on Highway 23 near milepost 291 in Finlayson Township, Pine County. The collision was reported at approximately 8:33 PM, drawing a response from the Pine County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol.
Authorities reported that a 2013 Subaru Legacy, driven by 18-year-old Brooke Emily Clennon of Sandstone, MN, was attempting to turn westbound onto Highway 23 when it slid on the ice covering the roadway. The Subaru was subsequently rear-ended by a 2005 Hyundai Elantra, also traveling westbound.
The driver of the Hyundai, 47-year-old Kevin John Pitreski of Finlayson, MN, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. It was noted that Pitreski was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, and alcohol was involved. The driver of the Subaru, Clennon, reported no injuries and was wearing a seat belt. Airbags were deployed in the Hyundai, while the Subaru’s airbags were not activated.
Roadway conditions at the time of the crash were icy, contributing to the Subaru’s initial loss of control. The collision remains under investigation by local authorities.
Our thoughts are with those affected, and we hope for a full recovery for the injured driver.
Winter Driving Hazards in Minnesota
Minnesota’s winter roads, particularly rural highways like Highway 23, are often impacted by icy conditions, which significantly increase the risk of accidents. Drivers must remain vigilant and adjust speeds to match roadway conditions to prevent collisions during winter months.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) advises that icy roads require increased stopping distances, cautious lane changes, and avoidance of sudden braking. Drivers should also ensure their vehicles are winter-ready with appropriate tires and safety measures in place.
Accidents during icy conditions can be particularly severe, with factors such as impaired visibility, alcohol involvement, and failure to wear seat belts compounding the risks. Victims may face medical, financial, and legal challenges in the aftermath of such incidents. Seeking prompt medical attention and understanding legal rights are critical steps for recovery.
