Fayetteville, NC (February 17, 2025) – Two emergency workers sustained injuries when an ambulance overturned in a collision with an SUV in Fayetteville on Sunday night.
The crash happened shortly after 9:35 p.m. at the intersection of Purdue Dr and Cardiff Dr, according to the Fayetteville Police Department and Cape Fear Valley Health. The accident involved a Cape Fear Valley LifeLink ambulance, which had two staff members aboard at the time. Fortunately, there was no patient in the ambulance.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to treat the injured ambulance workers. Authorities confirmed that their injuries were non-life-threatening. Meanwhile, the driver of the SUV was pinned inside their vehicle and required extrication by rescue crews.
Police reports indicate that the ambulance was traveling north on Purdue Dr when an SUV, traveling south, crossed the center line. The ambulance driver attempted to avoid a crash by making an evasive right turn, but the SUV struck the side of the ambulance just behind the cab. The impact caused the ambulance to overturn.
Traffic in the area was temporarily affected while emergency crews worked to assist the victims and clear the scene. The Fayetteville Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
“The safety of our first responders, patients, and community is our top priority,” said Chaka Jordan, Cape Fear Valley Health Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “We are grateful for the swift response of emergency personnel and will continue to support our team members involved in the incident.”
Our thoughts are with those injured in this crash, and we hope for their full recovery.
Emergency Vehicle Accidents in North Carolina
Accidents involving emergency vehicles pose unique risks, especially when ambulances, fire trucks, or police cars are responding to urgent calls. Due to high speeds and quick maneuvers, these vehicles can be vulnerable to collisions when other motorists fail to yield or engage in reckless driving.
North Carolina sees a significant number of crashes involving emergency vehicles each year. Many of these incidents occur at intersections, where misjudgments and failure to adhere to traffic laws contribute to dangerous situations. When ambulances are involved in crashes, not only are first responders at risk but patient transport and emergency medical care can also be affected.
For those injured in emergency vehicle crashes, the consequences can be severe. Beyond physical injuries, victims often face medical expenses, lost wages, and emotional distress. In cases where negligence is a factor, injured individuals may have legal options to pursue compensation.
