Farmington Hills, MI (February 7, 2025) – A Michigan State Police (MSP) trooper sustained injuries after his cruiser was struck while investigating a previous crash on I-275 near 10 Mile Rd on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 8:50 AM when a driver failed to move over for the stopped patrol vehicle.

According to MSP, the trooper was seated inside his cruiser, which had its emergency lights activated, and was parked on the left shoulder of the highway. A 23-year-old Dearborn man, driving a Jeep Liberty, failed to move over and collided with the patrol vehicle. Both vehicles sustained minor damage.

The trooper was treated for minor injuries at the scene and later released from medical care. The at-fault driver was unharmed in the crash.

MSP 1st Lt. Mike Shaw emphasized the importance of adhering to Michigan’s Move Over Law, stating, “The at-fault driver failed to move over and was driving too fast for the road conditions. This is just another example of drivers failing to move over for emergency vehicles and driving too fast.”

The incident remains under investigation, and authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution when approaching emergency vehicles on the roadside.

We are relieved that the trooper’s injuries were minor and wish him a swift recovery.

Move Over Law and Highway Safety in Michigan

Incidents like the one on I-275 in Farmington Hills underscore the critical importance of Michigan’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down and move over when approaching stationary emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Failure to comply not only puts law enforcement and emergency personnel at risk but also increases the likelihood of secondary crashes.

Highway environments, such as I-275, are particularly hazardous due to high speeds and dense traffic. When drivers fail to adjust their behavior—whether by reducing speed, moving over, or remaining attentive—they put themselves and others in danger. This is especially true during adverse weather conditions or when visibility is limited.

In Michigan, violations of the Move Over Law carry legal consequences, including fines and potential points on a driver’s record. More importantly, these violations can result in preventable injuries and fatalities. Public awareness and adherence to traffic laws are essential in reducing these incidents and protecting the lives of those who work tirelessly to ensure roadway safety.
