Farmerville, LA (December 09, 2024) – A fatal crash occurred on Saturday, December 7, 2024, just before 8:00 PM, when a two-vehicle collision resulted in the death of 62-year-old Ernest Mitchell of Farmerville. The crash, which took place on Louisiana Highway 33 at the intersection of Louisiana Highway 15, followed a vehicle pursuit by the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office (UPSO).
According to Louisiana State Police Troop F, UPSO Deputies attempted to stop Mitchell’s 2016 Nissan Frontier for a traffic violation. However, Mitchell fled north on Louisiana Highway 33. At the same time, a 2019 Toyota Tacoma was traveling south on the highway. For reasons still under investigation, Mitchell attempted to make a right turn onto Louisiana Highway 15 while the Toyota was turning left onto the same highway. The two vehicles collided at the intersection.
Mitchell, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the Nissan during the crash. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The driver of the Toyota, who was properly restrained, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Louisiana State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Routine toxicology samples have been collected from Mitchell and will be submitted for analysis. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
Our thoughts are with the families of those involved, and we extend our condolences to those affected by this tragic incident.
Fatal Crashes in Louisiana
Fatal crashes, particularly those involving high-speed pursuits, are a tragic reminder of the dangers on Louisiana’s roadways. In this case, Mitchell’s decision to flee from law enforcement led to a deadly collision. While the specific cause of the crash is still under investigation, it underscores the risks associated with vehicle pursuits and the importance of seatbelt use.
Mitchell’s ejection from the vehicle, due to being unrestrained, highlights the critical role of seatbelts in protecting drivers during accidents. Studies show that wearing seatbelts significantly reduces the risk of fatal injuries in crashes, particularly in high-impact collisions like this one.
As Louisiana State Police continue their investigation, drivers are reminded of the importance of obeying traffic laws and following the instructions of law enforcement. Fleeing from a traffic stop not only increases the likelihood of a crash but also endangers the lives of all road users.
