Fairfield, IL (October 31, 2024) – A two-vehicle accident occurred on Wednesday morning around 11:30 a.m. in Fairfield, prompting the response of local emergency services. The Illinois State Police Troop 9, along with the Fairfield Rural Fire Department and Wayne County Ambulance personnel, arrived at the scene located at 1464 South First St, just south of Wayne St.
According to the Illinois State Police, the incident involved a Freightliner straight truck and a Peterbilt truck-tractor semi-trailer, both traveling northbound on South First St. The accident unfolded when the Freightliner, which was leading, began to slow down in preparation for a left turn. Before executing the turn, the Freightliner veered to the right and then abruptly turned back left, positioning itself directly in front of the Peterbilt semi.
In an effort to avoid a collision, the driver of the Peterbilt truck-tractor attempted to maneuver off the roadway to the left. Unfortunately, this action led to the semi-trailer striking a power pole, resulting in the pole and power lines being knocked down. The semi then collided with a stationary junked vehicle nearby.
The driver of the Peterbilt semi was transported to Fairfield Memorial Hospital by Wayne County Ambulance with minor injuries. Emergency responders worked diligently at the scene, and two heavy-duty tow trucks from Tri-Power Towing of Effingham were called in to assist with the recovery of the vehicles. The scene was cleared just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
