Essex, NY (November 18, 2024) – A 15-year-old boy sustained life-threatening injuries Saturday afternoon in a crash involving an Amish buggy and a car on Stowersville Rd. Emergency responders, including local fire and rescue teams, quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured.

The accident occurred shortly before 4:30 PM when a Subaru Impreza, driven by a man from Keeseville, struck the back wheel of an Amish buggy while traveling west on Stowersville Rd. According to police, the collision happened at the crest of a hill, ejecting all three occupants of the buggy upon impact.

The buggy’s occupants were identified as three brothers, ages 16, 15, and 12, all from Essex. While the 16-year-old driver and the 12-year-old passenger were uninjured, the 15-year-old sustained a serious head injury. He was transported to Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital for evaluation and later airlifted to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington due to the severity of his condition.

New York State Police, along with local fire and rescue teams and the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, managed the response and initiated an investigation into the crash.

This tragic incident underscores the importance of increased awareness and safety measures to protect vulnerable road users. Our thoughts are with the injured teenager and his family during this difficult time, as well as the other individuals involved in this collision.

Amish Buggy Safety on New York Roads

Accidents involving Amish buggies are an ongoing concern in rural areas like Essex, NY, where horse-drawn vehicles share roads with motor vehicles. These incidents often occur in low-visibility areas, such as hills or curves, where drivers may not anticipate encountering slow-moving buggies.

Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution on roads frequented by Amish communities, maintaining lower speeds and staying alert, particularly in areas with limited visibility. Reflective markers and lights on buggies also play a critical role in preventing such accidents, particularly during early morning or late afternoon hours when light conditions are poor.

If you or someone you know has been impacted by a buggy or vehicle accident, understanding your legal rights and options is essential. Injuries from these incidents often result in significant physical, emotional, and financial challenges for victims and their families.
