Erie Township, MI (October 10, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred Wednesday evening when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in Erie Township. The incident took place at approximately 7:46 PM on Sterns Road, south of the South Dixie Highway.
Jacob J. Calleja, a 42-year-old resident of East Tawas, was walking along the edge of Sterns Road when he was hit by a 2000 Ford Excursion SUV driven by a 35-year-old man from Toledo, Ohio. According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the road does not have a sidewalk, which may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The driver was traveling with two passengers, a 13-year-old and a 12-year-old, both also from Toledo. Fortunately, all passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and were reported to be uninjured. The airbags in the vehicle did not deploy during the incident. After the collision, the driver stopped his vehicle on the south shoulder of the road.
Emergency responders arrived promptly and transported Calleja to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and authorities do not believe that alcohol or speed were contributing factors.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jacob Calleja during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Accidents in Michigan
Pedestrian accidents are a significant concern in Michigan, where many individuals are injured or killed each year due to collisions with vehicles. According to the Michigan State Police, pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries have been a growing issue on state roads. Between October 1 and October 8, 2024, 21 people died, and 121 were seriously injured in traffic incidents across the state.
In Michigan, pedestrians have the right of way in marked crosswalks, but accidents can still occur, especially in areas without sidewalks or proper pedestrian infrastructure. It is crucial for both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic laws to ensure safety.
When pedestrians are injured or killed in accidents, families may face significant emotional and financial challenges. Understanding their legal rights is essential, particularly when negligence may have played a role in the incident. Victims and their families may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages resulting from the accident.
If you or someone you know has been affected by a pedestrian accident, it is important to consult with a knowledgeable personal injury attorney who can help navigate the complexities of the legal process and advocate for your rights.
