Elkhorn, NE (February 17, 2025) – A fatal crash on West Dodge Road in Elkhorn claimed the life of one person and left two others injured on Monday morning as snowy conditions made travel hazardous.

According to investigators, a 60-year-old man was driving a 1996 Chevrolet K1500 pickup eastbound on West Dodge Road when he lost control of the vehicle. The truck spun out and veered off the roadway, colliding with a guardrail near the Skyline Drive bridge. The force of the impact caused the truck to roll onto its side.

A 60-year-old woman who was in the front passenger seat was partially ejected from the vehicle. Tragically, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. Omaha police confirmed that a 10-year-old boy, who was sitting in the front middle seat, and the driver both sustained non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to Bergan Mercy Hospital for treatment.

Authorities stated that road conditions played a significant role in the crash. Due to the accident, eastbound Highway 275 was temporarily closed from 240th Street to Skyline Drive. West Dodge Road and Skyline Drive reopened around 11:30 a.m.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the victim, and we wish a full recovery to those injured.

Winter Weather Accidents in Nebraska

Winter weather conditions significantly increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents, particularly on major roadways like West Dodge Road. Snow and ice can lead to reduced traction, making it more difficult for drivers to maintain control of their vehicles, especially when traveling at high speeds. Spinouts, rollovers, and collisions with guardrails or other obstacles are common in poor weather conditions.

Drivers should take extra precautions during winter weather by reducing speed, increasing following distance, and ensuring their vehicles are equipped with appropriate tires. Even experienced drivers can struggle in icy conditions, and black ice can make roadways treacherous without warning.

For victims of winter weather crashes, medical costs, vehicle repairs, and emotional trauma can create significant challenges. Seeking guidance on legal rights and available resources may help those affected recover physically and financially.
