Elkhart County, IN (January 11, 2025) – A 19-year-old man sustained serious injuries after being struck by his own vehicle during a collision on the Indiana Toll Road.

According to Indiana State Troopers, a black Ford SUV was traveling eastbound when it spun out and crashed. The SUV came to a stop facing south, blocking the eastbound lanes. The driver exited the vehicle and stood outside. Moments later, the stationary SUV was struck by an eastbound Volvo semi. The impact caused the SUV to hit the driver, throwing him into a ditch beside the road.

Emergency responders transported the injured man to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the semi, a 64-year-old man, was not injured in the incident. Traffic on the Indiana Toll Road was temporarily halted, with the eastbound lanes reopening before 8:30 p.m. after the crash investigation concluded and vehicles were cleared from the roadway.

Our thoughts are with the injured man as he recovers, and we hope for a swift and full recovery.

Winter Road Hazards and Accidents in Indiana

Winter conditions, including snow and ice, significantly increase the risk of road accidents in Indiana. Drivers are more likely to lose control of their vehicles due to slick surfaces, reduced visibility, and sudden changes in road traction. Incidents like this one highlight the importance of driving cautiously during adverse weather conditions.

When accidents occur, especially on busy roadways like the Indiana Toll Road, multiple factors such as speed, weather, and road awareness can compound the risks. Pedestrians and individuals exiting vehicles are particularly vulnerable in these scenarios, as even a minor collision can have serious consequences.

Drivers are urged to slow down, maintain safe distances, and ensure vehicles are properly equipped for winter weather. Individuals involved in accidents should always prioritize their safety and avoid standing in active traffic lanes whenever possible.

If you or someone you know has been involved in a winter road accident, assistance is available to help navigate the recovery process and understand your legal rights.
