El Paso, TX (November 17, 2024) – A tragic incident occurred early Saturday morning on Interstate 10 at Exit 19B, where two pedestrians were struck and killed by multiple vehicles. The El Paso Police Department has confirmed the victims as a 33-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl.
The accident was reported at 12:29 AM, prompting a response from Special Traffic Investigators. According to the preliminary investigation, 56-year-old Jose Antonio Gutierrez was driving a 2002 Silver Mitsubishi Montero westbound on I-10 at the Downtown Exit when the two pedestrians attempted to cross the highway from south to north. The Mitsubishi struck both individuals on the exit ramp.
Shortly afterward, a second unidentified vehicle struck one of the pedestrians who was already on the ground. The driver of the second vehicle has not yet been identified, and police are continuing their investigation to gather more information.
The collision resulted in a closure of a portion of I-10, with traffic redirected through Piedras Exit 21 as authorities worked to clear the scene and conduct their investigation.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Safety on Highways
Pedestrian accidents on highways, such as the tragic incident on I-10 in El Paso, often result in severe outcomes due to high vehicle speeds and limited reaction time for drivers. Crossing highways is highly dangerous, even at exit ramps, where vehicles may still be traveling at significant speeds.
Authorities and safety experts emphasize the importance of using designated pedestrian crossings and avoiding areas not intended for foot traffic to prevent such tragedies. However, when accidents like these occur, investigations are critical to determining fault and identifying all parties involved.
For families who lose loved ones in pedestrian accidents, the emotional and financial toll can be overwhelming. Seeking professional guidance can help families understand their legal rights and explore options for support during these challenging times.
