Edwardsville, KS (November 24, 2024) – An Edwardsville Police Officer was hospitalized Friday evening after a semi-truck side-swiped his patrol vehicle during a traffic stop on I-435 near Kansas Ave. The incident occurred around 6:10 p.m., approximately 4 miles south of the Kansas Speedway.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the semi-truck, a 2022 International driven by Richard D. Gould, 56, of Riverside, Missouri, was traveling southbound on I-435 in the second lane. Traffic had slowed and was reduced to two lanes as Officer Kyle McCullough conducted a traffic stop with his emergency lights activated.

Investigators revealed that Gould attempted to merge into the third lane, which was partially blocked by McCullough’s 2023 Dodge Durango patrol vehicle. The semi-truck side-swiped the patrol car, resulting in the crash. Officer McCullough, who was inside the vehicle and wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with injuries.

Gould, who was also wearing a seatbelt, was uninjured. The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident, and no further details have been released at this time.

Our thoughts are with Officer McCullough, and we wish him a swift recovery.

Traffic Accidents Involving Emergency Vehicles

Crashes involving emergency vehicles, such as the one on I-435, often highlight the risks faced by law enforcement and first responders while performing their duties. These incidents can occur due to driver inattention, failure to yield, or misjudgments while navigating congested or restricted areas.

Seatbelt use, as seen in this incident, plays a critical role in minimizing injuries during collisions. The involvement of large vehicles, like semi-trucks, often exacerbates the severity of accidents due to their size and weight.

Investigations into such crashes are essential to determine contributing factors and enforce measures to prevent similar incidents. Public awareness campaigns, such as “Move Over” laws, emphasize the importance of giving space to emergency personnel on roadways.

For individuals injured in collisions involving emergency vehicles, understanding their legal rights is crucial for navigating recovery, addressing medical expenses, and seeking compensation for damages.
