Ector County, TX (March 7, 2025) – A tragic head-on collision in Ector County late Tuesday night claimed the lives of both drivers involved, according to a crash report from Sergeant Steven Blanco with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 11:31 p.m. along US 385 near mile marker 361. Authorities reported that a 2021 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by 20-year-old Emerald Neomi Carta of Odessa, was traveling south in the inside lane of the highway. Meanwhile, a 2003 Ford Explorer, driven by 33-year-old Jose C. Balderas Conteras of Ballinger, was traveling north in the southbound lanes of US 385.

DPS stated that Conteras collided head-on with Carta’s vehicle. Both drivers suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators noted that Conteras was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, while Carta had been properly restrained. The reason why Conteras was driving in the wrong direction remains undetermined as officials continue their investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of those involved in this devastating accident.

Wrong-Way Collisions in Texas

Wrong-way accidents are among the most dangerous types of crashes, often leading to fatal consequences. These collisions typically occur due to driver impairment, fatigue, or confusion, particularly on highways where speeds are high and reaction times are limited. Unfortunately, head-on impacts at high speeds can result in catastrophic injuries or death.

According to data from the Texas Department of Transportation, wrong-way crashes have been a growing concern on major highways across the state. While traffic safety measures such as improved signage and roadway markings help prevent such incidents, driver awareness remains critical in reducing these tragic accidents.

Victims’ families may face overwhelming emotional and financial burdens following such tragedies. Understanding legal rights and seeking the appropriate support can be crucial in the aftermath of a devastating crash.
