Eckles Twp, MN (February 9, 2025) – Emergency responders were quick to the scene, providing care to the injured victims following a multi-vehicle crash on Eastbound Highway 2 in Eckles Township, Beltrami County. The accident occurred around 12:33 p.m., according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The collision involved three vehicles: a 2012 Ford Fusion, a 2016 Ford Taurus, and a 1995 Saturn SL2. The Ford Fusion, driven by Joy Eileen Shelquist, 85, of Bagley, MN, was traveling westbound and attempted to make a left turn onto Pete Lane NW. The Ford Taurus, driven by Rebecca Jo Dreher, 30, of Bemidji, MN, was traveling eastbound and collided head-on into the passenger side of the Fusion. The impact caused the Taurus to bounce off the Fusion and strike the stationary Saturn SL2, driven by Brian Andy Simon, 43, of Bemidji, MN.

Both Shelquist and Dreher sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Sanford ER Bemidji for treatment. Simon was unharmed in the crash. All drivers were wearing seat belts, and no alcohol involvement was reported.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by local authorities. Bemidji Fire Department and Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident.

Traffic Accidents in Minnesota

Traffic accidents, such as the one on Highway 2 in Eckles Township, are common in rural areas due to varying road conditions, unexpected vehicle maneuvers, and limited visibility at intersections. Collisions often result from distracted driving, misjudgments during turns, or failure to yield.

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, thousands of injury-related crashes occur annually throughout the state. Beltrami County experiences a notable number of these incidents, particularly on highways like Highway 2, where mixed traffic and rural settings contribute to accident risks. Drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant, follow traffic laws, and exercise caution at intersections.

In cases like this, it is essential for those involved to seek medical evaluation promptly, even if injuries appear minor. Additionally, documenting the scene and consulting with legal professionals can help protect one’s rights and ensure proper compensation for any damages incurred.
