East Greenwich, RI (November 9, 2024) – A 60-year-old man from West Warwick lost his life Saturday evening after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Division Road. East Greenwich police provided details of the tragic accident in a statement released Tuesday.
The collision occurred around 7:30 PM near the Extended Stay hotel. The man was crossing Division Road when he was struck by a Toyota Tundra. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police reported that the man was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to reduced visibility. The driver of the Tundra remained on the scene and is cooperating fully with investigators. Authorities noted that speed does not appear to have been a factor in the accident.
The incident is under investigation as police work to determine all contributing circumstances.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Safety on Rhode Island Roadways
Pedestrian fatalities, such as the one on Division Road, are a somber reminder of the importance of visibility and caution, particularly during nighttime hours. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that a significant proportion of pedestrian fatalities occur at night, often due to low visibility or lack of reflective clothing.
Drivers are urged to stay vigilant in areas with foot traffic, particularly in poorly lit conditions. Pedestrians are also encouraged to wear bright or reflective clothing and use designated crosswalks when possible to increase their visibility to drivers.
