East Boston, MA (January 28, 2025) – The southbound lanes of Route 1A in East Boston remain closed as of Tuesday morning following a charter bus crash on Monday that caused significant damage to utility infrastructure. The bus, which was transporting workers to Logan Airport, toppled multiple light poles and transformers, creating a hazardous scene.
According to Boston police, the incident occurred around 5:45 a.m. near Suffolk Downs. The Academy charter bus crashed on the southbound side of 1A at 175 William F. McClellan Highway, shattering its windshield and causing wires to scatter across the roadway. Video footage from the scene showed the bus stopped amidst the wreckage, which included four downed light poles and two damaged transformers.
The crash resulted in two reported injuries. Both individuals were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The bus had several passengers on board at the time of the incident, but no further injuries were reported.
Massachusetts State Police and MassDOT crews worked throughout the day to detour traffic. Southbound vehicles were rerouted at Boardman St, while northbound traffic was detoured at Addison St. The northbound side of Route 1A reopened shortly before 8 p.m. on Monday, but the southbound lanes remain closed as repair crews continue their work. Drivers heading to Logan Airport are advised to allow extra travel time and seek alternate routes where possible.
