Dothan, AL (January 17, 2025) – A man suffered significant burns in a fire at Alabaster Bay Apartments on Thursday afternoon. The fire broke out shortly after 2:00 p.m. in the apartment complex located off U.S. Hwy 231 on East Wayne Rd, near Dothan RV Park.

Dothan Fire Chief Chris Ethridge confirmed that the fire began in the kitchen as a result of an accidental cooking mishap. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and contained the fire to the kitchen, minimizing damage to the rest of the apartment. The injured individual sustained serious burns to one arm and was transported to a Dothan hospital. Plans are underway to transfer the man to a specialized burn center for further treatment.

Thanks to the swift actions of the Dothan Fire Department, no other residents were injured, and the fire damage was kept to a minimum. Investigations have confirmed the fire was unintentional. Our thoughts are with the injured man, and we hope for a smooth recovery.

Apartment Fires in Alabama

Apartment fires are a serious safety concern across Alabama, often resulting from common household activities like cooking, as seen in this incident at Alabaster Bay Apartments. According to fire safety reports, cooking is one of the leading causes of residential fires nationwide, accounting for a significant percentage of injuries and property damage.

Residents in apartment complexes face unique challenges in preventing and responding to fires, as shared walls and communal spaces can allow fires to spread rapidly. Alabama fire safety officials recommend the following precautions to reduce the risk of fires:

  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Keep flammable materials away from stoves and other heat sources.
  • Install and maintain smoke alarms, checking them regularly.
  • Have a fire extinguisher readily available and know how to use it.

For those injured in apartment fires, seeking immediate medical care is crucial, especially for burns, which can require extensive treatment and recovery time.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a residential fire, you may be entitled to support for medical expenses and other losses. Understanding your rights and options is an important step in the recovery process.
