Dorchester County, SC (February 6, 2025) – A head-on collision in Dorchester County on Wednesday evening resulted in one fatality and sent another person to the hospital, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 5:00 p.m. on Orangeburg Rd, approximately two miles west of Summerville, near the intersection with Hudson Place. Troopers reported that a 2023 Ford Transit Van was traveling eastbound while a 2023 Kia Sedan was heading west. The two vehicles collided head-on at the intersection, causing both to veer off the roadway and into a ditch.

The driver of the Kia Sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. The Dorchester County Coroner has not yet released the victim’s identity. The driver of the Ford Transit Van was transported to Trident Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles.

The roadway was closed for several hours as law enforcement and emergency crews responded to the scene. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Head-on Collisions and Road Safety in South Carolina

Head-on collisions, like this tragic incident on Orangeburg Rd, are among the most dangerous types of vehicle accidents due to the high-impact forces involved. These types of crashes often result in severe injuries or fatalities, particularly on rural or suburban roads where speed limits are higher and visibility may be limited.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, factors contributing to head-on collisions include distracted driving, impaired driving, and unsafe passing maneuvers. Roads like Orangeburg Rd, which serve as key connectors between residential areas and larger towns like Summerville, often see increased traffic during peak hours, heightening the risk of serious accidents.

For families affected by fatal accidents, the aftermath can be overwhelming, both emotionally and financially. In cases where negligence or unsafe driving practices contributed to the crash, surviving family members may have the right to pursue legal action for wrongful death, seeking compensation for funeral expenses, lost income, and other damages. Injured victims may also be entitled to compensation for medical expenses and recovery-related costs.

If you or someone you know has been affected by a head-on collision, understanding your legal rights and recovery options is essential.
