Donna, TX (November 2, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Friday night that resulted in the loss of two lives. At approximately 9 p.m. on November 1, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a two-vehicle crash on US 281 Military Highway, east of FM 493.
Preliminary investigations indicated that a U.S. Border Patrol transport van, carrying a driver and a passenger, was traveling eastbound on US 281 Military Highway. In a devastating turn of events, a Ford F-150, occupied by the driver alone, was reported to be driving on the wrong side of the road, heading westbound on US 281.
The F-150 collided head-on with the transport van, leading to a rollover and subsequent engulfment in flames. The driver of the van, a U.S. Border Patrol Agent, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later released.
Tragically, the passenger of the van, 21-year-old Jose Martin Rodriguez-Lua, a U.S. Border Patrol Processing Coordinator from Brownsville, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the F-150 suffered severe burns that rendered him unrecognizable, and he succumbed to his injuries shortly after the crash.
The incident remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
