Des Moines, IA (December 4, 2024) – A Des Moines police officer was injured Tuesday night when his patrol car was struck by a driver believed to be impaired. The crash occurred around 9:34 P.M. at the intersection of SE 14th St and Watrous Ave.
The officer, a 24-year-old who has been with the department since 2023, was driving southbound on SE 14th when a northbound vehicle, driven by 21-year-old Facundo Ramos-Batalla, attempted a left turn onto Watrous Avenue. The vehicle struck the driver’s side of the patrol car, causing both the officer and Ramos-Batalla to suffer minor injuries. Both individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Ramos-Batalla has been charged with operating while intoxicated (OWI), failure to yield the right of way upon a left turn, and operating without a valid driver’s license. The Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
