Derry Township, PA (November 14, 2024) – A tragic crash on Route 322 in Dauphin County claimed the life of a New Jersey man early Monday morning. The incident occurred around 6:15 a.m. when a box truck veered off the westbound lanes and collided with the Fiddlers Elbow Rd overpass bridge.
According to Derry Township police, the box truck, driven by 28-year-old Zachary Bautz of Maple Shade, New Jersey, struck a message board and concrete barrier before driving onto an embankment and crashing head-on into the bridge. The truck flipped onto its side upon impact. Bautz was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash prompted the closure of Route 322 for nearly nine hours as highway engineers assessed the structural integrity of the bridge and ensured it was safe for traffic.
