Dartmouth, MA (December 18, 2024) – A tragic incident claimed the life of a 73-year-old woman Tuesday afternoon when she was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Bridge St and Water St. Emergency personnel responded to the scene around 3:45 p.m., according to the Dartmouth Police Department.
Authorities report that the woman was in a crosswalk when the collision occurred. Dartmouth Fire Department personnel provided aid on-site, and the victim was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, she was pronounced dead.
The driver involved remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. A preliminary report indicates that “solar glare” may have played a role in the incident, while speed was not considered a contributing factor. The crash remains under investigation by local authorities.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Accidents in Massachusetts
Pedestrian accidents, particularly at intersections, often result in severe injuries or fatalities. Factors like low visibility, adverse weather, or solar glare can significantly increase risks for both pedestrians and drivers, even in areas with designated crosswalks.
In 2023, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation reported hundreds of pedestrian-related crashes, many of which occurred at busy intersections or during low-light hours. Drivers are reminded to approach crosswalks with caution, reduce speeds, and remain alert, especially when visibility is compromised.
Pedestrians should also take precautions, such as wearing reflective clothing and remaining vigilant while crossing roads, to improve their safety.
